Marin's Promise by Madeline Martin

Blurb:

A LADY WHO WILL DEFEND HER FAMILY AND HER CASTLE...
Lady Marin Barrington, eldest of the Earl of Werrick's five daughters, is a born protector. Not only has she taken on the role of mistress of the castle and caregiver to her sisters upon their mother's death, she also acts in her father’s stead while he is serving the king abroad. Dedicated and resolute, failure is never an option for her. So, when a reiver forces his way into the castle, Marin won’t surrender easily and takes it upon herself to kill the usurper. Except plans go awry when passions are awoken and matters get complicated.
A MAN WHO MUST SUCCEED NO MATTER THE COST...
Bran Davidson's sister is going to be hanged, unless he agrees to take Werrick Castle. Ever a pawn in a rich man's game, Bran has no choice but to force his way into Werrick on behalf of the Scottish Middle March Warden. He quickly discovers getting into the castle is the easy part. Dealing with its mistress, however, will take every ounce of cunning and determination he can muster, especially when she turns his blood to fire.
A PROMISE THAT CHANGES IT ALL...
In a game where desperation and love dictate the lives of many, a simple promise can change the tide of favor and open the door to pleasure and danger alike.

Excerpts:

Excerpt 1
July 1333
Brackenhill, England

Lady Marin Barrington was used to attacks from the reivers. As the eldest daughter to the third Earl of Werrick, the English West March Warden, she was even used to acting as his unofficial constable in his absence.
Threat of an impending battle in Berwick had resulted in the earl bringing a majority of his forces with him to go to King Edward’s side. The remaining soldiers looked to her for guidance, to ensure the people within the castle remained properly defended and safe.
The castle had not been breached, not in the last eleven years when the last raid forced them to erect fortified curtain walls so great no marauders could get penetrate them to reach the castle within. Not until this moment.
Marin kept her arrow nocked and pointed toward the dark-haired man below. The blonde girl in his arms did not move. It was that last fact which made Marin's heart chill.
“Open yer gates,” he shouted.
The army around him was larger than the one remaining to defend the castle. Well over one hundred men. If the gates were opened, her forces would be easily overwhelmed.
“Open yer gates, or I will kill yer sister.” The man leapt from his stocky reiver’s horse and dragged Catriona with him, her hair streaming in the summer wind like a banner of gold.
As soon as his feet hit the ground, Catriona jumped to life, launching her elbow at his face. He jerked hard to the side from the impact but kept his hold on her.
Marin lowered her bow and edged to the castle wall.
“Don't give in to him, Marin—” Cat opened her mouth to say more, but the reiver snagged her around the waist and pulled her toward him. A knife flashed at his side and pressed to her neck.
He sniffed hard, the way one often did when a blow to their face resulted in a bloody nose. “Open the gate or I will kill her.”
Marin's heart plunged into her stomach.

Excerpt 2
He drew his thumb from her mouth and kissed her again, his mouth hot and tasting of the spiced wine he'd drunk earlier. It would be too easy to give in to the seductive words.
Rather than allow herself lustful thoughts, Marin pushed to the forefront the things she ought to recall.
Eversham's sacrifice in his attempt to save Cat. The way her sister had so valiantly hit Bran, a man twice her size, and how the younger girl had pleaded with Marin to let her die to save the castle. Her soldiers locked in the dungeon below the castle. The anticipation of Father's reaction when he discovered Marin had lost Werrick Castle.
She touched Bran's naked chest. His skin was warm and soft, the soap clean scent heady. The coarseness of his hair was masculine and appealing. He pushed closer to her, so her hands pressed to him more firmly. She let her fingers work down the bands of his flat stomach to where their hips touched. To where she hid her dagger.
The metal had heated from where it sat between the heat of their bodies. Marin had to skim its surface several times before finding the hilt. In her efforts, her fingers brushed the hard column of manhood beneath Bran's leather trews. He groaned and ground his hips harder against her.
Pleasure tingled through Marin and made her want to elicit more of his groans, more of his enjoyment. She steeled herself, closed her hand around the hilt and drew out the blade. It slid from its sheath with a telltale metallic hiss. Before surprise could reflect in Bran's eyes, Marin pushed it to his throat.
She meant to keep shoving it until her hands were wet with the life gushing from his body. She meant to kill him and remove his head from his body to show to his men and strike fear into their hearts.
Except he stared at her with as much hurt as he did surprise. It should not have stayed her hand, but it did. And that was her greatest mistake.
It took only that one fractured moment of doubt, of care, for him to grip her hand and twist it so all the strength drained from her fingers and the dagger clattered to the floor. Marin was familiar with the move, she'd used it many times herself. She knew better.
The dagger glinted from the floor.
“Marin,” Bran said, his voice light with chastisement.
That was when she slammed her forehead into his, for no daughter of Werrick went down without a fight.

Excerpt 3
All of Bran's senses became sharper in battle. He discerned the hiss of a blade over the cries of the dying and the clanging of weapons, the odor of an impending attacker over the horrors of death and dying redolent around him. His awareness worked to keep his body strong and his focus intact.
When a slight blonde woman wearing chain mail and wielding a mace stepped forward into the gap where the soldiers had fallen, however, his focus shattered. She was too little for battle, barely a woman at all.
His body moved with memorized action, blocking and killing as needed, but his gaze remained fixed on where young Ella whirled the spiked metal ball of her mace. Her lip curled back in a vicious snarl as she let the heavy head of her weapon slam into a man's face, its impact wet and hollow. Blood exploded where the Graham’s face had been.
Ella kept her attention fixed on another reiver and tugged her weapon free with a jerk. Anice appeared at her side with her arm outstretched, as if the action might keep the two younger sisters behind them safe. In front of her, Piquette stood like a sentry, his mouth colored with blood and his snout peeled back from his bared teeth.
Like Marin, Anice wielded a blade, arcing and slicing with a skill only slightly less than that of her older sister.
Another man in the distance gave a wild shriek into the air, followed by another and another until the wild cries rose above even the chaos of war. Then it stopped, as suddenly as it'd begun.
The women paid it no mind and continued to fight with their exceptional skill. While Bran didn't know much about the Earl of Werrick, he was well aware the man had trained his daughters to fight like men. And in doing so, the earl had undoubtedly saved their lives.

My Review:
5 Stars
Marin's Promise  by Madeline Martin is book One in the Borderland Ladies Series. This is the story of Bran Davidson and Marin Barrington.
Bran has had to make a living for his sister and himself being a border reiver / raider.  But the one thing Bran and his crew knew that no women or children would be hurt or raped..it was just one of the rules they had.  When Bran sister is taken by Kerr who swears to put her to death if he doesn't take the Werrick Castle over.  Bran does find a way into the Castle but then he finds out that may have been the easy part...because meeting the protector Marin sets up a whole new obstacle.
Marin as the eldest daughter of the Earl of Werrick she had to take on the role of mother, protector and overseer of the Werrick's Castle after her mother was raped and died in childbirth.  This set the sister's father on a downward spiral for a while, and when he was able to go on with his life he went off to war for the King.  So Marin is the barrier of protecting her family and will do anything for her family but feelings can't be stopped between Bran and Marin.
WOW...what a great start to a series!  I am such a fan of Ms. Martins writing and she never lets me down ...one of my go to authors!  Excited to read more in this series and of course by Ms. Martin.

Excerpt from The Earl Next Door by Amelia Grey
Perhaps he should have stated who he was when he first entered the drawing room, but he’d thought it wasn’t necessary. He was only too well aware of how many private pleasure houses were hidden among the cozy streets of respectable London and how easily and quietly they were established. He’d certainly availed himself of more than a few over the years, which was why he’d promised his aunt he’d deal with the one she believed was moving in next door to him and down the street from her.
Lyon could now see that Lady Wake’s earlier perplexed expressions and her sense of outrage had flashed warning after warning, which he’d ignored. That the countess didn’t immediately engage him with welcoming smiles should have been a swift indication all wasn’t as it seemed, but he was already in an irritable state of mind when he arrived at her house and unwavering in his thoughts not to be persuaded from his mission by a tempting woman.
He’d returned home from a laborious meeting with his unprepared solicitor, wanting only to get ready for an evening at White’s so he could get caught up on the latest news and indulge in a game or two of billiards, a few hands of cards, and an expensive bottle of brandy. Instead, he’d come home to find his aunt in his drawing room wringing her hands in misery over the possibility of unmentionable women setting up a forbidden business in their quiet neighborhood. And insisting he must do something about it at once.
Given all that was put before him, including the countess’s attire, what else could he have possibly done other than assume she was a paid woman preparing to fulfill some lucky man’s fantasy for the evening?
“The mistake was mine. I thought this was the kind of house where a man is always free and welcome to come and go as he pleases without hindrance, and not have to reveal his name or wait around to be announced. If I had known you were a lady and not an angel of the evening, I wouldn’t have acted so freely.”
“An angel of the evening?” She puffed out a breath of exasperation. “What rubbish. Clever words or phrases won’t hide what you thought when you entered or how you spoke to me. Now that you know who I am, you are still free to speak to me as before.”
That she would suggest he continue to speak so openly with her surprised him and was downright refreshing. Most of the ladies he knew would have fainted when he made the remark about paying her fee for the evening and pray to never hear such a vile comment again.
“Nevertheless, I will give you the respect you deserve and watch my language now that I do know, my lady.”
He watched her breathing ease and calmness settle over her as they each assessed the situation. That her recovery was quick and solid was a testament to her strength.
“I heard you were out of Town when I moved into the neighborhood a few days ago,” she continued in a calm and confident voice.
“I returned last evening.”
“That doesn’t absolve your actions tonight. You should have checked with someone before you came charging over with uncivil actions, assumptions and untrue allegations.”
Lyon’s jaw clenched tighter. No doubt about that. He should have questioned his aunt more about her suspicions, but he wasn’t about to explain that to the countess and implicate his aunt and her friend. “I was reasonably certain I had good cause to act as I did.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No.” What else could he say?
“And earl or not, sir,” she added valiantly, “you are an ogre as I’ve found most of your ilk are.”
He couldn’t argue with that either.
“Before you go, I’d like to know what made you think this was a house of pleasure for men.”
Lyon shook his head slowly. She was unbelievable. Asking him to explain what she’d just slapped him for. He wasn’t going to get caught in that snare again. “I’d rather not say, my lady.”
“Of course you don’t want to, but you must. I need to know what caused you to act as you did. Others could make the same mistake.”
Something settled in Lyon’s chest. A feeling that he’d never had before. Lady Wake was no shy or simpering female. She was courageous, impassioned beyond belief, and probably too strong-willed for her own good.
That intrigued him. It made him want to answer her with candid freedom, but every fiber of his being as a gentleman warned against such talk with a proper lady.
Yet, after only a brief hesitation, he responded, “If you insist.”
“I do.”
“It was brought to my attention that there have been some peculiar things going on over here while I’ve been out of Town.”
“Peculiar?” Concern resurfaced in her expression. “What do you mean? There is no reason for us to stand on ceremony, my lord. We are quite familiar with each other now. Speak to me as you would a madam and tell me what made you think my home was a house of ill repute.”
“Very well. An abundance of deliveries of bed-chamber furniture going into the building behind this house.”
“Why would that be strange, sir?” she asked him crisply. “Beds are necessary for everyone.”
“And women coming and going at all hours of the day and night.”
“Ah, yes,” she said on a breathy sigh as the meaning of his words became clear to her and she relaxed once again. “Now I understand. Beds and women. What else is a man to think of other than pleasure?”
Lyon felt the only thing he could reasonably do at this point was lift his brows, and say, “For that I can offer no apology.”
“It’s true, there have been many beds delivered. The building behind this house is being furnished as a boarding school for girls, my lord. The women who have been seen coming and going will be their tutors. Currently, some of the women have different jobs they must return to each day. They are free to leave at whatever time they deem necessary to make their other duties and commitments.”
“A boarding school?” he repeated, wondering why the hell his aunt didn’t know that. She was usually one of the first to hear the latest gossip.
“Yes. So whatever tawdry vision you’d imagined would be taking place between these walls tonight or any other won’t be happening. My home is not what you thought it was, and anyone else who assumed the same will have to look elsewhere for his decadences.”
The countess opened the door for him.
Lyon felt his expression softening, his admiration growing. For a number of reasons, including the truth of her words, there was no repairing their inauspicious meeting.
He nodded without further words, turned, and walked out of her house.

Faking Ms. Right by Claire Kingsley this is the story of Shepherd Calloway and Everly Dalton.
There is a Prequel called 'Everly Dalton's Dating Disasters' where we see some of the dates Everly went on. I haven't yet read it but at the time of this posting it was Free (Novella size) on Amazon, so I do want to go back to read some of her dating history.
Everly has a bad track record for dating as we learned but she does succeed at her job as a executive assistant for the last few years. Everly boss, Shepherd had a history of finding new assistants very frequently but that changed with Everly. Shepherd is nothing but business, no show of emotions and is tired of women just wanting him for money and status. So when he breaks with his latest lady and she tries to draw back at him he goes into defensive mode. This leads him to asked Everly to be in a pretend relationship which involves her moving in with him. Everly doesn't like to disappoint anyone along with always trying to help people. So when Shepherd asked her she says yes, but she also needs something from him too. So a deal is struck for a pretend relationship with as we know leads to something more.
I enjoyed the secondary characters and hope to read more of them in the future.

He was Oliver Blackthorn. The 16th Earl of Lockhart. Thirty-third in line to the throne. And a liar.

He towered above me in another flawless suit, looking expensive and totally fuckable. “Are you stalking me? That’s it, right? You are some rich, perverted stalker, who gets his rocks off by torturing women like me?” He patted the dogs on the head, grabbed their collars and unclipped their leashes so I could untangle myself. As I stood, he leaned down and brushed his lips against my ear. “You have no idea, princess… just how I thought about torturing you.” Goosebumps broke out despite the ninety-plus degree day. A tingle ran up and down my spine and settled low in my belly where it spread like wildfire. I was so fucked and he hadn’t even touched me yet.

Excerpt:

“Rex?” “Hmm?” He won’t look at me. His grip on the steering wheel so tight his knuckles are turning white. He swallows so hard I can hear the gulp from where I’m sitting next to him. When I lay a hand on his forearm he almost jumps out of his seat. “You okay?” “Fine,” he croaks. “You don’t sound fine.” I almost start giggling because if I’m reading the situation correctly, he’s nervous about having sex with me. Or, maybe, just what my intentions are. Rex, the sexy bartender that every single female in town lusts over and many have slept with — which I refuse to think about — is hesitating. I know he wants to. His body language, actions and words have told me as much. When he kisses me, it’s real. It sounds simple, because it is. I’ve kissed other men. He’s kissed other women. But it’s never been like this for me. And I know it’s never been like this for him, either. I know that might make me sound arrogant or overconfident, but I’m not clueless. Nor am I insecure. His feelings toward me are obvious, he’s not hiding it in any way, and unless he’s the most devious person in the world, I think he’s just as turned on by my presence as I am with his. Which is at holy shit levels, if I’m being honest. I’m in a dang near constant state of arousal around him. We pull into my driveway and he cuts the engine. His left leg is propped against the door and aside from the constant tapping of his thumb against the steering wheel, he’s the picture of relaxation. “Just gonna sit out here all night?” I ask, already sensing his hesitation to come inside. I can also see how badly he’s battling with himself right now. To sex her. Or not to sex her. I think we’re on the same page here, though. It’s just going to be fun messing with him a little bit. He’s made it very clear that his past relationships have either ended horribly, by way of his brother, the ass, or by the night being over with. He’s also hinted he would like to see where this thing between us is going to go. For that to happen, we need to not have sex. At least not yet. Even though every molecule in my body is currently firing and screaming at me to HAVE SEX WITH THIS SEXY AS FUCK GUY ALREADY. Okay, so maybe I’m not as secure in my decision as I thought but hey, I know he isn’t either. I open my door and step down. “Come on, you big baby. I don’t bite.” Then before I close the door I pop my head back through the opening, “Unless you want me to.” I slam the door and run up the few stairs to my front door, quickly unlock it, and rush inside. I count to five and he’s already charging in after me. “You think you’re so funny, don’t you? Teasing me like this?” “Whatever do you mean?” “I’m in your head, gorgeous. I know what you’re thinking.”

My Review

FALLING FOR YOU by Jennifer Van Wyk is book Two in the All For You Series. This is the story of Chloe and Rex. I haven't yet read the previous book, so for me this was a standalone book.
Chloe is pretty much alone after the lost of her family where is Rex seems to choose not to be involved with his. Rex too is a no commitment person but when these two meet they find a kinder spirit. This is a slow burn with some funny parts thrown in.
Enjoyed their story and hope to read more from this author.

Undefeated by Helen Hardt is Parts 13-15 in the Blood Bond Saga. This continues the story of Erin Hamilton and Dante Gabriel, so you should read the previous books first before starting this one.
Dante has gone to the underground to confront the women that held him hostage but of course Erin, Jay and River are following him too. Dante powers are getting stronger due to his bond to Erin. But this book takes them to testing everything that they have build up to.
This whole series has been a page turner keeping you on the edge of your seat and wanting more from them. I am a fan of Ms. Hardt's writing and this series sure proves why I am a fan.
Loved it.

SLAY: RIVALRY by Laurelin Paige

SLAY: RIVALRY (Slay Quartet #1) by Laurelin Paige Release Date: June 4th

Blurb Edward Fasbender is a devil.
He's my father's business rival, a powerful, vicious man who takes what he wants and bows to no one. I only took the meeting because I was curious. I thought he was going to offer me a job.
But that's not what he's after at all. His proposal is much more intriguing, and I see an opportunity. An opportunity to turn the tables and bring down the devil.
I've gotten in trouble playing these games before. I know when the risk is too great, when the stakes are too high. I know how to be cold and strong-willed and destructive. I know how to withstand dominant men with arrogant charm and rugged features.
Yet I can't resist taking on Edward.
And I can't resist the pull he has on me.
Soon I'm not so sure which side of the battle I'm standing on--if I'm the warrior meant to slay,
Or the one who will be slain.

The Assignment by S. Nelson is the First book in the Massey Security Duet.
Owen and Ford Massey are Ex-Marines who have went forward to open a Security Company.  The brother's have agreed to take on Walter Dessoye as a client.  Mr. Dessoye is a famous director who has received threats on his family.  So Owen and Ford are to be security detail for his daughters Emily and Cara.  Owen who is more the easy going brother of the two is assigned Emily who is a quiet, by the book girl who like to help out a charities.  Ford who is the more uptight, by the book, no patience for the unruly things or people has to be security for Cara.  Cara changed from the sweet girl to the party girl who is into everything and doesn't want to be monitored nor appreciates her fathers security detail...Ford.  Cara just wants to live her life and starts to push at Fords nerves to retaliate.  In this book it sets up the tone of relationship and in the next book I would think would lead to more romance in their relationship.
This book doesn't finish their story so we will be getting another installment shortly...I can't wait.  Ms. Nelson is one of my go to authors.  I can never put her books down and always looking for more from her.

Alyona

They say there’s a fine line between love and hate.
I believe it.
Brash sure lives up to his nickname.
Impetuous and rude, the billionaire hotel developer can’t possibly offer me anything but a much-needed paycheck.
Except, everything changes when our plane crashes.
Not only do we have to face the dangers of this tropical island, we must also endure our growing attraction to each other.

Brash

The spoiled, self-entitled mafia princess isn’t all she appears.
Beautiful and alluring, Alyona also possesses an innocence that calls to something long buried.
That’s risky for a man like me and a woman like her.
I’m a dirty bastard at the best of times, and this isn’t the best of times.
The perils we face are pushing us together.
And keeping things professional is no longer an option once I’m set on making her mine.
We’ve survived a plane crash, but can we survive the island with our hearts intact?

Excerpt

The current was strong and pulling us away from the wreckage. I kept my arm around Aly, lifting her face. I creased my forehead, trying to work out our flight path. Where the fuck were we?
An ice-cold shard of panic pierced the pit of my stomach. I tried to ignore it. Fucking impossible. For the first time in my life since I was a child, events had overtaken me. Were out of my control. And there wasn’t a damn thing I could do other than try and survive.
Aly moaned and I whispered, “I’m here. You’re safe.”
She shivered and I held her close to share my body heat. Not that there was much of that. I was chilled to the bone.
I looked around again.
We were surrounded by nothing but rolling waves.
Stay calm. I repeated the words to myself like a mantra.
Hours passed, it seemed, although I wasn’t sure. I felt completely disoriented.
Aly had passed out again; I kept checking her pulse. My eyelids grew heavy and I wanted to doze off, but we’d be separated.
The sound of splashing.
A pod of dolphins had arrived, eyes flickering with curiosity.
“Hey, guys,” I managed to rasp. “Come to rescue us?” I laughed at the absurdity of my question.
With a wave of their tails, they left in obvious pursuit of some lunch.
The current took us further and further away from where the plane had gone down.
More splashing.
Rhythmical this time.
I swept my gaze around again and a slow smile of relief spread across my face. I let out a whoop. The sound I’d heard was the noise of waves hitting the barrier reef to an island. I could just see it in my peripheral vision.
I kicked my feet so frantically my shoes came off. Using the arm not holding Aly, I swam hard, fighting the current that was sweeping us parallel to land.
Kick, kick, kick.
I spotted a break in the waves and managed to propel us through it into the calm waters of a lagoon.
My lungs burning, I kept swimming until my feet touched the sandy bottom.
With the last vestiges of my energy, I heaved Aly out of the water onto the shore.
I turned her onto her side and tilted her head backwards. Then, totally wrung-out, I collapsed next to her.

Pulling my two heavy textbooks for this class out of the stack too, I arrange everything nicely. Just as I am getting my brand new pencils ready, I am startled by a loud bang. My desk mate drops his books on the countertop and sits down, looking at me askance.
I startle to realize that it’s the blond Greek god I ran from only yesterday. Tall and broad-shouldered, he wears his black denim and dark blue tee shirt incredibly well. He knows it too, judging by his posture. He perches on his stool and crosses his arms, expectant. Perfectly unkempt sandy blond hair, dark brows spread wide over the darkest blue eyes I’ve ever seen, a patrician nose, two incredible cheekbones, and the most expressive lips…
This guy is fucking hot, excuse my French.
Which are currently smirking at me. I knew hot guys back home in Prineville. Mostly I avoided them, truth be told. But this guy is on another level. He is so dazzling that he could work in television… and bad tv just so happens to be my weakness.
Being around this guy is enough to make me rethink the bright yellow tee shirt dress I am wearing. I want more than anything to tug the hem down and smooth my hands over my black tights, but I don’t.
Instead I blush, fumbling to introduce myself. Sticking my hand straight out and tossing my messy blonde hair back, I try for an authoritative voice. “I’m Emily Danes.”
At the front of the classroom, the professor clears his throat, ready to start talking. My eyes dart to him, but then he reaches for his bunch of tissues again. Glancing back to my partner, I see him eye me up and down in a totally unsubtle way.
At last, he leans forward and shakes my hand. His skin against mine is hot. I bite my lip, refusing to let a little thing like instant animal attraction do me in.
“I’m Wolf,” he says, his voice low and gravelly. He looks me over once more. Then he arches a brow, his smirk deepening. “Did you find all of your panties last night?”
My cheeks instantly go the exact color of a ripe tomato. I lick my lips and frown. What am I supposed to say to that?
